Relatives permit options for Hungary
For a relatives permit, such as that of a relative of a Hungarian citizen, family members and accompanying spouses and/or children, the following permit types are applicable. Click on each to jump to that part of the page.
- Family member of Hungary citizen (relatives residence permit)
- Family member of EU citizen (relative’s residence permit)

Children, grandchildren, spouses, parents/guardians, grandparents, dependents and life partners all fall under one of the following relatives permit options for Hungary.
Family member of Hungary citizen (relatives residence permit)
What is this permit used for?
Those whom are family members of Hungarian citizens and wish to live in Hungary, accompanying or joining the Hungarian citizen
Do you meet the criteria?
Are you one of the following? (Persons whom this form of residence is used for)
- Spouse
- Descendant (child, in some instances grandchild, etc) of a Hungarian citizen or his/her spouse (under age of 21 if not personally dependant. If a dependant descendant, age is irrelevant.)
- Ascendant (parent, grandparent) of Hungarian citizen or his/her spouse.
- Persons having been granted custody over a Hungarian citizen minor. (Under the age of 18)
- Third country national registered life partner of a Hungarian citizen (the life partnership must be registered in front of Hungarian authority or other EU countries’ authority.)
- Third country citizen having been co-inhabited with a Hungarian citizen in the same household for over a year. (one calendar year, proof of cohabitation needed.)
- Persons whom are personally and financially dependent on a Hungarian citizen or, someone being personally taken care of by a Hungarian citizen due to severe health reasons in the same household.

What is this permit used for?

Family reunification of third country nationals (as well as accompanying spouses and/or children)
Whom is this permit used for?
- Third country (non-EU) nationals joining or accompanying other third country national family members who have already been granted residence in Hungary in forms of residence permit or settlement permit.
- Spouse
- Dependent minor descendant (including adopted and stepchildren, as well as minor child of the spouse over whom the spouse has custody rights)
