Frequently Asked Questions

The timeline varies depending on the type of permit. Temporary residency typically takes 30-60 days, while permanent residency can take 60-90 days after submission.

Yes, most residency permits allow you to work in Hungary. Some permits may require an additional work permit or have specific conditions.

While basic Hungarian is required for permanent residency, it’s not mandatory for temporary permits. We can connect you with language resources.

Non-Hungarian citizens can acquire citizenship through the simplified naturalisation procedure if they can prove Hungarian ancestry (tracing lineage back to a presumed Hungarian citizen ancestor) and demonstrate a basic communicative knowledge of the Hungarian language. Applicants must also provide a clean criminal record and ensure their naturalisation does not compromise Hungary’s public or national security.

A Business Permit for Hungary allows business owners, directors, or managing partners who take an active role in running a company to obtain temporary or permanent residency. It offers low capital requirements, affordable living costs, a business-friendly 9% corporate tax rate, and allows one director per company to obtain residency without a separate work permit.

Non-EU citizens who wish to work in Hungary under an employment relationship must secure an employment contract or preliminary agreement with an employer. The work permit is issued for a specific employer and employment relationship. Applicants must also demonstrate sufficient funds, adequate accommodation in Hungary, and appropriate health insurance coverage.

Standard permanent residency can be obtained by third-country nationals who have been residing continuously in Hungary for at least 3 years, have not been absent for more than 90 days per year, and possess employment and accommodation. However, preferential permanent residency is available after just 1 year for people of Hungarian origin or those married to a Hungarian citizen for at least 24 months.

Third-country nationals holding a valid Hungarian residence or settlement permit (such as a work permit) can bring their spouse and dependent minor descendants (including adopted and stepchildren) under family reunification. Note that parents and grandparents are not included in third-country national family reunification applications.
