New Zealanders can immigrate to Hungary!
Hungary is a top EU destination for New Zealanders
The New Zealand passport gives you lots of options when it comes to traveling, working, and living abroad. But many New Zealanders end up walking the same beaten path to Canada or London, not realising that there are plenty of other great options out there.
Hungary is one of these options. Here’s why New Zealanders should get a working holiday visa in Hungary:
It’s Easy
Unlike other countries, which make you apply for their Youth Mobility or Working Holiday Visas in New Zealand, you can actually apply for the Hungarian working holiday visa when you’re already in Hungary. You don’t even need to leave the country to activate the visa.
This makes it a super easy option if you’ve been overseas for a while and have no intention of flying all the way back to New Zealand to get a visa. The actual process of getting the visa is relatively straightforward as well, although you may want to get in touch with a Hungarian immigration lawyer to ensure you’ve got everything you need.
Apply until 35
That’s right! While many working holiday visas for New Zealanders are only for under 30s, the Hungarian working holiday visa is valid until you’re 35. If you’ve always wanted a year in Europe, you’ve got plenty of time to make it happen.
Budapest
While there are plenty of great cities in Hungary, Budapest is in a league of its own. This city is separated in two by the Danube river. Buda is west of the river, and is considered to be the more historic side (you’ll find the castle here). In Pest, on the east side, you’ll see the central city, with excellent bars and restaurants. You’ll also get to see the beautiful parliament building.
Budapest is also home to an abundance of hot springs, with bathhouses located throughout the city. If you’re looking for a fun, interesting European city, perfectly located for exploring Europe and with plenty to do on the weekends, Budapest is an excellent choice.
It’s Affordable
Hungary is a country that gives you great bang for your buck. The wines are excellent, and you can buy a standout bottle of Hungarian wine for HUF1,200 (forints) (approximately $6.20 NZD [as of May 2017]). And you can grab a beer for as little as 200 forints (around $1 NZD).
The city is packed full of attractions, and it’s an affordable option for people who want to live in Europe without paying European prices for a night out.
In Budapest, you can get a whole month of public transport (on all of the trams, subways, and buses) for less than $50 NZD. Taxis are also affordable, and can easily be booked through the Taxify app or other means.
Getting around Europe is a breeze, with flights from as little as $30 NZD to various cities, including Paris, Istanbul, Rome, and more. Travelling by train is also a popular option, and you can easily travel to plenty of great destinations from Keleti Railway Station.
Be Different
Be honest- how many of your friends have done their OE in London or Vancouver? Budapest is an exciting city with an interesting history, and it’s a little different compared to the usual choices for most kiwis. While Hungarian is a difficult language to master, many Hungarians speak English. You’ll have the chance to learn more about a completely different culture, while learning about the unique history of Hungary.
Hungary is an up-and-coming destination for many Kiwis, so get here before the secret is out!
