Hungary has a very standard array of immigration permits to allow those seeking to perform various functions into the country. Some would argue that more importantly, these immigration permits also allow foreigners into the EU.

Do you want to live with family in Hungary?

There are three immigration permits for relatives of some sort accompanying a main family member in Hungary.

Family member of Hungary citizen (relatives residence permit)
This permit is ideal for those whom are family members of Hungarian citizens and wish to live in Hungary, accompanying or joining the Hungarian citizen.

Family member of EU citizen (relative’s residence permit)
This permit is ideal for those whom are family members of European Union citizens and wish to live in Hungary, accompanying or joining the EU citizen.

Family reunification of third country nationals (As well as accompanying spouses and/or children)
This permit is used for third country (non-EU) nationals joining or accompanying other third country national family members who have already been granted residence in Hungary in forms of residence permit or settlement permit.

Do you want to study in Hungary?

Study Permit (residence permit)
This permit is for you if you are a third country nationals/citizens whom wishes to reside in Hungary for the purpose of studying in an accredited secondary or higher education academic institution on a full-time basis. The study permit also applies if you are participating in a preparation course of an accredited higher education institution.

Do you want to work or conduct business in Hungary?

Residence Permit (For purpose of work)
This permit is for those whom are non-EU citizens/nationals who wish to work in Hungary based on employment relationship. The work permit is also for those whom wish to perform work individually for a compensation (independent contractor, consultant, private entrepreneur).

Business Permit
Hungary offers temporary and permanent residence permits to business owners whom take an active role in their company as directors or managing partners. These immigration permits for business have a great deal of requirements, yet are still considered the cheapest entry into doing business in the European Union (EU).

Do you want to invest in Hungary?

Residency bond program (discontinued)
This program presented an opportunity for getting permanent residence in an EU and Schengen member state, and live, do business, or travel freely to and within Europe. You were required to make a state-guaranteed investment of EUR300,000 to be returned at the end of the 5-year term. Applicants of all nationalities could obtain permanent resident permits with only a single visit to Hungary.

Do you want to turn your existing employment relationship into permanent residence in Hungary?

EU Blue Card (EU residence card)
For those having established employment relationship for a role requiring advanced/special skills and wanting a more permanent residence in the EU, there is an option nicknamed the EU Blue Card. In essence, a non-Hungarian who has already obtained his or her advanced skills work permit, and meets certain other requirements, is able to stay for between one (1) and four (4) years on the same EU Blue Card. It is a much more permanent upgrade to the advanced skills work permit for Hungary.

Do you want to make Hungary your home?

Permanent residence
In the first year you will get a Visa at the Consulate which you can travel into Hungary with. This Visa is valid for 30 days from the date you entered the Schengen area. During this period you will need to go to the Hungarian Immigration Office in person to receive the final Schengen Residence Permit and to arrange the Address Registration.

In the second year Non-EU citizens can obtain a residence permit at the Hungarian Immigration Office. You need to prove your employment. There is also the option of a immigration card that can be obtained by some. (Read more to find out if you qualify).

Citizenship
Foreign citizens who have never been Hungarian citizens may acquire Hungarian citizenship by naturalisation.(Read more on how to become a citizen)

Third country nationals may receive a residence permit for medical treatment, whom wish to stay in Hungary to receive a medical treatment.
