Obtaining Hungarian Police Clearance Certificates or Certificates of Good Conduct
The Criminal Records Authority is responsible for issuing Hungarian Police Clearance Certificates. These certificates may be requested in order to establish or maintain a legal relationship and certify conditions set out in the Hungarian law. Official Certificates of Good Conduct are public documents which can be used for legal purposes.

- Has a clean criminal record
- Is not under the effect of forbidding from public affairs, profession, or what kind of professions they are forbidden from
- Meets the requirements stipulated by an act
Who needs to apply for Hungarian Police Clearance Certificates?
All individuals that wish to apply for permanent residence in Hungary need to obtain official Police Clearance Certificates. Upon applying, you will need to supply the following information:
- Hungarian Personal Identification Number (not applicable to foreign nationals)
- Full names and surname
- Place and the town of birth
- Date of birth
- Citizenship
- Mother’s maiden family name
- Current residential address
What are Hungarian Police Clearance Certificates used for?
Hungarian Police Clearance Certificates or Certificates of Good Conduct are issued by police or government agencies of a country. They are issued to enumerate any criminal records that applicants of these applications may or may not have. Details of criminal records may include details of previous arrests, convictions, and possibly any criminal proceedings.
Official Certificates of Good Conduct are issued on the basis of data registered in Criminal Records. All of the data included in these certificates exclude details related to offence proceedings. Hungarian Police Clearance Certificates (or Certificates of Good Conduct) are issued upon the request of each individual concerned.

Documents required for obtaining a Police Clearance Certificate for Hungary
- A completed application form for an Official Certificate of Good Conduct
- In the event that the applicant is unable to manage his or her own affairs, authorisation for his or her proxy will be required. Details to be confirmed in the authorisation include personal details of the principal and proxy as well as the personal signature of each. The subject of authorisation also has to be stated along with the signature of two witnesses, their addresses and the date.
Processing times for Hungarian Police Clearance Certificates
It takes approximately eight days for the Certificate to be issued once the application has been received. Applicants that make electronic payments will receive their Certificates 8 days after the payment has cleared into the Authority’s bank account. This time excludes mail delivery time. Urgent applications can be processed and received by no earlier than one business day after submission and payment but within a maximum of 5 days.
What are the costs for obtaining Hungarian Police Clearance Certificates?
The administration and processing fee for a Police Clearance Certificate is 3100 HUF for all normal applications by mail and via electronic submissions. In cases where urgent processing is required, the cost of a Police Clearance Certificate is 4400 HUF. These fees can be paid via postal order, attached to the application form, if you apply via mail. If you lodge an electronic application, a bank transfer or credit card payment must be made via Electronic Payment and Settlement System (EFER).
The validity of Hungarian Police Clearance Certificates
A Hungarian Certificate of Good Conduct is valid for three months. Unless otherwise prescribed, the certificate is valid for ninety days from its date of issue.
How to collect Hungarian Police Clearance Certificates
You may collect your Certificate of Good Conduct in any one of the following ways:
- By mail as recorded delivery where the addressee has exclusive rights for the receipt
- In person in the event that an urgent application was made. Personal collections are to be done at the Customer Service Centre of the Criminal Records Authority.
- By the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the foreign representations abroad.
