Your work visa for Hungary gives you great options.
In many ways, Hungary is an ideal place for expatriates to live and work. With a low overall cost of living and openness to newcomers, Hungary is an attractive country – if and when you follow their regulations down to the T. On this page, we will be taking a look at what a work visa for Hungary allows you to do, and what it does not.
Understanding a Work Visa for Hungary
A work visa for Hungary (or work permit) allows you to pursue gainful employment in Hungary. Individuals who want to live and work in Hungary have been allowed to apply for combined residence and work permit since 2014, which eliminates the need for submitting two separate applications and go through two separate processing procedures. Unlike a residence permit, a work visa for Hungary does not allow you to live and work indefinitely in Hungary as you will have to work in Hungary under a temporary residence permit. If you want to work for a company in Hungary, you will require permission to do so, typically granted by applying for a Hungarian work permit.
What a work visa for Hungary can be used for:
- Non-EU citizens may use Hungarian work permits if they wish to work in Hungary
- Independent contractors, consultants, and private entrepreneurs may also use Hungarian work permits to do their business in Hungary
- The work visa for Hungary also permits you unrestricted entry and long-term stay (90 days within any 180 day period may be spent in Schengen countries), but you will not be permitted to work within the Schengen countries.
Work permits are issued for specific employment relationships with specific employers, which means that each time a new job is started, a new work permit needs to be applied for and obtained.
What a work visa in Hungary does not allow you to do:
- It does not permit you to work within any of the Schengen countries
- It does not grant you access to services available to Hungarian citizens such as healthcare, schooling, and the purchasing of rural real estate
Eligibility
A permit or work visa (as well as a residence permit) may be issued for the purpose of employment to third-country nationals if:
- The applicant’s purpose of residence is to perform work for or under the direction and supervision of others, for remuneration, under contract for employment relationship; or
- The applicant performs work as the owner or executive officer of a for-profit business association, co-operative society or some legal entity, in addition to the work actually performed in that capacity.
The validity of work visas for Hungary
A Hungarian work permit is valid for three years, or if you have applied for a combined residence and work permit, it is valid for a period of two years, but both types of permits are renewable.
