Hungarian permanent residency means EU permanent residency.
As a non-EU national living, working or running a business in Hungary, you might be residing in the country on a temporary residence permit. This also means that you have to renew your residency in Hungary every few years as a routine part of your Hungarian life. If you have never applied for renewal of your permit, it might seem like a scary process, but with a little help, it is actually very straightforward. Let us discuss the process and how it works.
What does it mean when you have to renew your residency in Hungary?
Essentially, when you renew your residency in Hungary, your status gets re-evaluated by the Immigration Office. Officials double-check that you still fulfil the conditions of your residency as per the original issuance under which it was granted. If you obtained residency as a student or as a business owner, you would still need to be a student or business owner to renew your residence permit.
In order to prove that you still meet the conditions, you will be required to submit various documents for processing. Students will need to submit proof of enrolment at a Hungarian university. Business owners need to submit business plans and business contracts to prove that they still own the business in question.
About the timing of your renewal
You have to apply for the renewal of your residence permit at least 30 calendar days before the permit expires. Should you miss the cut-off date for the renewal of your permit, your application will be processed as a new application, and not a renewal.
We always recommend that our clients start working on their renewal at least 60 days before their current permit expires. This ensures that they have enough time to gather all the required documents. In cases where our clients also have work permits, we suggest starting the process as early as 90 days before expiry.
