Who can become a permanent resident in Hungary?
If you are looking to become a Hungarian resident and you are not a citizen of an EU country, you have to apply for a Residence Permit at the Immigration Office before your short-stay visa expires. You can also choose to apply for a Registration Card if you are an EU citizen. Whether you apply for a Residence Permit or a Registration Card, you will need to prove your ability to work in Hungary as well as your current status of legal residence.
What you can do with a Residence Permit or Registration Card
If you have a Residence Permit or a Registration Card, you have the right to live and work in Hungary as well as to travel to and from Hungary. Along with your Permit or Card, you will receive an Address Registration Card, which will be the documentation you need to legally live in Hungary. Each member of a family that moves to Hungary is required to apply for a Residence Permit or a Registration Card individually.
Residence Permits are generally valid for one year, but this depends on obtaining a work permit for Hungary. After you have a Residence Permit and an Address Card, you are allowed to apply for a Social Security Card as well as a Tax Card.
The validity of Registration Cards
EU citizens that apply for permanent residency in Hungary are issued with Registration Cards, which are valid for unlimited periods of time. As long as you have a continual status of working or studying in Hungary, you do not need to apply for a new card. To apply for residency in Hungary as an EU citizen, you will have to prove your ability to cover your costs for the duration of your stay in Hungary as well as proof of accommodation and employment.
The validity of Residence Permits
Non-EU citizens receive Visas at the Hungarian consulate with which they can travel to Hungary during their first year. The Visa is valid for 30 days after you enter the Schengen Area. During the 30-day period, you have to report to the Hungarian Immigration Office to collect the final Schengen Residence Permit and arrange for the Address Registration.
After your first year of living in Hungary, you can obtain your Residence Permit at the Hungarian Immigration Office where you have to prove that you are employed, have accommodation and that you have sufficient funds to cover your costs for the duration of your stay in Hungary.
What is an Immigration Card?
Hungarian Immigration Cards can be issued to individuals that have been living in the country for three continuous years and have not been absent from the country for more than 90 days per calendar year.
You can, however, apply for an Immigration Card after one year of living in Hungary if:
- You are of Hungarian origin, or you have Hungarian relatives
- You are married to a Hungarian citizen of a foreigner with a Hungarian Immigration Card (and you have been married for at least two years)
