Offering easy access to almost all parts of Europe, Hungary is a prime destination for expatriates looking to relocate to Europe. With its low cost of living and a thriving business environment, the country offers amazing opportunities for immigrants. And for a reasonable investment, the business immigration to Hungary program can see you acquiring residency and even citizenship in the country. Here are some of the most basic details you need to know about the program.
The basics of business immigration to Hungary
Start by opening a business in Hungary
In order to make use of the business immigration to Hungary program, you will need to start a business in the country. Thankfully, the process of doing so is relatively simple, but we can help you through every step of setting up your Hungarian company. To learn more about the process and requirements, read our quick guide here.
Then consider your visa options
In order to enter the country and set up a business, you will need a temporary visa for Hungary. In most cases, a short-term (30-day) visa can be used for these purposes. Once you have established your company, you can apply for residency. As soon as you become a Hungarian resident, you can make use of family reunification visas in order to relocate your family to Hungary.
How and when to apply for residency in Hungary
When your company has been established, and your business plan is approved, you become eligible to apply for temporary residency in Hungary. After you have been a temporary resident of Hungary for three years, you are eligible to apply for permanent residency. In order to obtain permanent residency, you will have to prove that your business is thriving in the country and that it attracts enough income to support you and your family in Hungary. Obviously you will also have to pass a criminal background check and be proficient in written and spoken Hungarian before being granted permanent residency.
Can I become a Hungarian citizen through the business immigration program?
If you and your family have permanently lived in Hungary for eight years, you can apply for citizenship. You will go through the same process that is required for permanent residency plus you will also need to obtain a good score in the neutralisation exam. Keep in mind that you are not obliged to apply for citizenship at all. You can stay in Hungary for as long as you like once you have obtained permanent residency as long as you follow the country’s laws and remain self-sufficient.
