Off to Hungary with kids: Budapest playgrounds and parks

Budapest playgrounds
Budapest playgrounds are numerous.

When planning your move to Hungary, it is essential to find places and spaces where your children can settle into the Hungarian way of life as well. Luckily, this is one area in which Hungary really delivers. Budapest playgrounds can be found at just about every corner of the city so that you will have an abundance of options. Let us take a look at some of the best parks for kids in the capital city.

Budapest playgrounds – a roundup of the best

Erzsébet tér

Erzsébet tér is one of the best gated Budapest playgrounds in the Pest side of the city. The park has a cool outdoor play area and also features on-site restaurants, a skate park, and of course, the Budapest Eye Ferris Wheel.

Liberty Square

Szabadság tér or Liberty Square caters to two different age groups and is split in half by a large walkway. The toddler area features a mini train and more than enough sand for the little ones to play around in. Older kids can enjoy the swings, challenging climbing structures, and obviously some sand play areas. Adults can enjoy a great cup of coffee at the square’s central café while watching the little humans at play.

Olimpia játszótér

As the centrepiece of Olimpia Park close to the Danube River, this Budapest playground is best known for its giant wooden ship play structure. The park itself is filled with lush greenery and a seriously impressive collection of play structures for the kids.

Budavári Mátyás király játszótér

Located on the Buda side of the city, this cool, themed playground sits tucked away in the hillside but is well worth exploring. The playground is gated and located merely a few meters away from the shady picnic area. Complete with cannons and tunnels, the elaborate castle play structure is bound to captivate kids of all ages.

Rumini játszótér

Based on a book series by Judit Berg, a Hungarian author, this themed playground is every kid’s dream come true. It features everything little humans need to escape reality: a ship play structure, a castle, a sand wheel, and a super cool maze structure for toddlers.

Margaret Island

Margitsziget (Margaret Island) is a great retreat for families that call Budapest home. The whole island is basically one big park and features everything you need to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a day. In the evenings, free light-and-music shows are hosted at the large fountain on the island. The island also has an auxiliary zoo, boasts remains of monasteries and churches, and is home to a variety of playgrounds for the children.

Gellért Hill

Gellért hegy, located on the Buda side of the city, is well-known for its climbing structures, trampolines, and slides for the more adventurous kids. As you make your way up the hill, you can sit down to catch your breath and enjoy the sweeping views of the city. Start your hike at the Gellért Thermal Bath and then make your way toward Liberty Square and the Hapsburg fortress called the Citadella. Allow the kids to play at the various play areas scattered around the hill.
